Five Green Spaces Not to Miss in NYC
Whether you’re a first-time visitor to the Big Apple or a frequent traveler, there’s no mistaking that NYC’s plant shops offer a little oasis of greenery to distract us from the concrete landscape.
I’ve lived in NYC for 12 years and have been really into plants for the last 2-3, which has lead me to really expanded my green palette of plant shops around the city. Here’s a few of my top favourites that I would recommend visiting on your next trip. These shops are unique in their own way – whether it’s their selection of plants, customer service, or budget-friendly prices – they all share one thing in common – their love for plants is juxtaposed into their shop aesthetic that transports you, even momentarily, into a jungle getaway of Instagram-worthy selfies.
Daniela’s Flower Shop II
3650 Broadway, New York, NY 10031
I’d like to start with the plant store that I’ve been going to for the longest – Daniela’s Flower Shop. Their 2 plant shops have been around for as long as I can remember and have been servicing the Washington Heights community for many years. The larger of the two is on 150th and Broadway. They have a large selection of common houseplants and outdoor plants as well. They also have a nice selection of fresh-cut flowers that can be made for any arrangement and can work around your budget. They also have a nice selection of pots to accentuate your new plant at good prices. They will repot plants for free and offer a delivery service for large plants that can’t be easily transported.
289 Grand St, New York, NY 10002
On the opposite end of the island lives a hidden gem of plant shops. No fancy interior is needed for this place because the collection and size of the plants speaks for itself. They have a lovely selection of nicely-priced plants and pots. It is the only place I have been to that sells the sensitive plant, Mimosa pudica. They’re always stocked with small plants like Pilea Peperomioides and XL plants like the Alocasia pictured. If you buy a plant and a pot they will repot it for you for free.
Tropical Plants & Orchids (Flower District)
106 W. 28th St., New York, NY 10001
The flower district is a must-see for any plant lover. A plant-lined street along 28th between 7th and 6th avenues of a dozen or so plant shops to choose from. They have tons of succulents, small and large house plants, and even some rare ones from time to time. Prices range, but overall decently priced. Many of the shops seem family owned and have been around for a long time. I was lucky one day and walked into Tropical Plants and Orchids and found this Monstera adansonii and got it for a very good price – I was able to bargain! The shops are all plants, but luckily Home Depot is nearby to pick up a pot for your new green friend.
91 West St., Brooklyn, NY 11222
When it comes to aesthetics, Greenery is at the top! When you walk in you feel like you’ve entered a luxurious jungle of hanging plants, small and large tropical plants, and a custom plant wall that makes you want to redo your small NYC apartment. They have a friendly staff, offer workshops, and have a unique selection of pots that are not seen in many other shops around the city. They will repot your plants and offer delivery services as well. And before your leave, don’t forget to take a selfie in their bohemian-styled chair that makes you forget you live in an urban city.
135 Kent Ave., Brooklyn, NY 11249
Rooted brings together a great selection of plants with a friendly staff that makes you not want to leave! They also have some cute niche spots to catch that plant selfie before you head off to local shops and restaurants. They have recently moved into a nice large space where you will find rare succulents, small and large house plants and the common 4-legged friend to guide you along the way. They offer some great workshops each month and really make a good effort to work with the community to connect people closer to nature. 10’s across the board for this shop.
Some honourable mentions that also should be visited are:
In addition to spending a day traversing through Manhattan and Brooklyn, no trip would be complete without heading to the Bronx to visit the New York Botanical Gardens. Their conservatory is beautiful with various different rooms of tropical and dessert plants.
Hopefully by the end of your trip you will see New York as the Big (Green) Apple!
