“A safe rule of thumb is: your plants should ‘always see the sky, but never the sun’. This way, your plants will get lots of indirect light, but will never be at risk of burning.”

  Matakana, New Zealand

Andrew, currently travelling in New Zealand, has left his plants in the faithful care of plant dad Paul back in Sydney. He has a penchant for plants that hang, trail or contort like Rhipsalis or Donkeys tail. His favourite plant always changes, he says, but is currently Xerosicyos danguyi or the Silver dollar vine.

When styling plants, Andrew likes to layer shapes, textures, shades and variegations to create depth and interest. Having only balcony and interior space, he likes to invest in great shelving and create a vertical garden. IKEA has the best shelving for indoor and outdoor styling, he recommends. He uses lots of hanging plants and mixes in other personal nic-nacs. Andrew has found that plants of the same family create a great symbiosis, so he tries to bunch these together to improve their happiness and health.

Andrew says: “Nothing is more exciting than the thrill of discovering a new plant, or finding a familiar plant that has grown into an interesting shape, so I always make sure I visit every nursery I come across. You never know what you may find inside!”
